Confirmation

Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation which are the foundations of Christian life. The faithful are born anew by Baptism, are strengthened by Confirmation, and nourished by the Eucharist. For information on these three sacraments as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, see Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
Confirmation celebrates the Spirit of God in the Church. One of the ensemble of the Sacraments of Initiation into the Church, together with Baptism and Eucharist. Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which seal or confirm the baptized in union with Christ and equip them for active participation in the worship and apostolic life of the Church. Outside of the RCIA, the bishop is the normal minister; he may delegate this privilege to pastors.
Any young person who is at least a High School Sophomore is invited to participate in a Confirmation Preparation Program that runs from the fall through spring of each year. The program follows the guidelines established by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. There is a parent meeting offered in the fall, and youth will be interviewed before they are confirmed. The youth attend 16 hours of curriculum, a retreat, and a follow-up session to Confirmation. For information about the program, please contact the parish office.
If you are seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation as an adult in the church, please contact the parish office for information on the next steps.
